4 Truths About Argan Oil You Should Know

Argan oil is a natural oil extracted from the kernels of the argan tree (Argania spinosa), which is native to Morocco, North Africa. These nuts contain between 1 and 3 oil-rich argan kernels which are then extracted by cracking and roasting the nuts to produce what we know as argan oil. Argan oil, however, falls in the middle of the spectrum—it’s not too heavy, not too light—making it perfect to use on all skin types. It’s packed with omega fatty acids, vitamin E, and linoleic acids, all of which work to lightly moisturize your skin, soften dry patches, and even reduce acne. It's essentially nature's protective, nourishing superfood for your skin.

Argan oil is one of those ingredients that you see in every product, read about in every article, and yet still have no clue as to why, exactly, it’s so awesome. And we're here to change that. Here are four truths to know about argan oil.

It Is One Of The Rarest Oils In The World.

Argan oil is traditionally referred to as “liquid gold” because it is packed with vitamins A, E and C, antioxidants and omega-6 fatty acids that are essential for healthy skin and hair and are used to protect against environmental damage and premature aging.

Multipurpose Functions.

Argan oil has traditionally been used both topically and orally to improve the health of skin, hair, and nails. It contains a number of different beneficial properties and vitamins that form a powerful combination to boost skin health.

Treatment of Acne.

Oftentimes, people break out not because they have naturally oily skin, but because their skin barrier is dry, damaged, and inflamed from a regimen of harsh acne products. That damaged skin barrier then overcompensates by producing even more oil, which can clog pores and trigger breakouts. Argan oil, however, can help break the cycle. Argan oil’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds may support reduced redness and irritation of the skin caused by acne. The oil also may contribute to skin hydration, which is important for acne prevention. Whether argan oil is effective in treating your acne likely depends on its cause. If you struggle with dry skin or general irritation, argan oil may provide a solution.

Easy To Add To Your Routine.

As argan oil has become increasingly popular, it’s easier than ever to add it to your health and beauty routine. Because argan oil is relatively lightweight, it sinks in and absorbs rather quickly, so you’ll be left with a subtle, glow-y sheen, rather than an oil slick.

Argan Oil Can Be Used For The Skin.

Argan oil is usually used topically in its pure form — but also frequently included in cosmetic products like lotions and skin creams. While it can be applied directly to your skin, it may be best to start with a very small amount to ensure that you won’t have any adverse reactions.

It Can Be Used for Hair.

You can apply argan oil directly to damp or dry hair to improve moisture, reduce breakage, or reduce frizz. It is also sometimes included in shampoos or conditioners.

How To Use Argan Oil On Your Face: 5 Easy Steps.

  • Wash your face with cold water using a gentle face wash to make sure your face is clean before applying anything else to it.
  • Pat your face dry (don't rub as this can irritate your skin) and leave your skin slightly damp, but not wet.
  • Apply 2-3 drops of argan oil to your face and gently massage in using circular motions ensuring that you're spreading it evening around your face.
  • Leave to absorb into your skin for 5 minutes (the longer you can leave it the better).
  • Repeat this process once a day and your skin will flourish.

How To Choose An Argan Oil.

  • Always choose 100% organic argan oil to limit your exposure to toxins.
  • Choose cold-pressed oil, because this method of extraction helps to preserve the integrity of the oil and its beneficial properties.
  • Avoid plastic containers and choose a dark glass container when possible. Dark glass protects the oil from the light, which can break down its best properties and make it less effective.
  • Argan oil should have a slightly cloudy appearance. This is a sign that the oil is organic and not counterfeit.
  • Moroccan Argan oil is gold in color, hence the nickname “liquid gold.” If the color is pale or much darker, it may not be pure Argan oil.
  • Argan should be the only ingredient. Avoid oils that have additives or preservatives.

Because it's such a powerhouse ingredient, argan oil is also used in all kinds of skincare products, from oil-based cleansers to moisturizers, and even lip balms. Shop our favourite organic, pressed age-old Argan oil.
